Problem(Abstract)

Unable to open the "Edit assembly" page of the Hierarchical Stage properties.
Getting error "The underlying connection was closed : Unable to establish a trust for the secure channel SSL / TLS"

Cause

The security defined on the client machine does not allow installation of certificate.

Diagnosing the problem


Resolving the problem

You can manually install the certificate using the following procedure :

1) Extract the certificate from the WebSphere Application Server web console into a file :

From a web browser, go to the WebSphere Application Server web console :
https://<hostname>:9043/ibm/console
On the left menu go to : Security > SSL certificate and Key management
Then click on the link "Key stores and certificates" under "Related Items"
Click on the IISTrustStore link, and on the "Signer certificates" link in the Additional Properties"
Select the "root" certificate and click on the Extract button to export it. Enter a filename and select the file format (you can use the default setting with "Base64-encoded ASCII data".
The file will be created on the Service Tiers system under the directory :
<WAS_HOME>/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/InfoSphere/etc
Copy this generated file on the client machine, and use this procedure to install it :

2) Install the certificate on the client machine :
run "mmc.exe" from Windows start menu
in the MMC windows, from "File" menu, run the "Add or Remove Snap-ins"
Add the "Certificates" snap-ins and select it for the "Computer account", and also for the "local computer". Then click OK to get this snap-ins in your list (under the "Console Root").
Go under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" > "Certificates".
In the Action menu, select "All Tasks" > "Import"
Enter the filename/pathname of the certificate exported in step 1)
Place this certificate under the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities".
